Justin Roiland #

Introduction #
Justin Roiland, the co-creator of “Rick and Morty” and the voice of both of its title characters, saw his career collapse in January 2023 when NBC News revealed that he had been charged with felony domestic violence in Orange County, California. Adult Swim, Hulu and his own video game studio all severed ties with him within days, and his roles were recast. The charges were dismissed on March 22, 2023, with prosecutors citing insufficient evidence, but by then his career in television animation had effectively come to an end.
Background Information #
Mark Justin Roiland was born on February 21, 1980, and was raised in Manteca, California, later attending Modesto Junior College. In 2012, Adult Swim approached Dan Harmon to produce a new animated series, and Harmon in turn approached Roiland; together they created “Rick and Morty,” an animated sci-fi sitcom about a mad scientist and his grandson, which debuted in 2013 to widespread acclaim. Roiland voiced both protagonists, Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith, from 2013 to 2022, and served as a co-writer and executive producer alongside Harmon. The Emmy-winning show became one of the most successful series Adult Swim ever produced. He also co-created Hulu’s “Solar Opposites,” in which he voiced the main character Korvo, and in August 2016 he founded a video game studio initially called Squanchtendo, later renamed Squanch Games.
The Controversy or Incident That Led to Their Cancellation #
In May 2020, prosecutors in California charged Roiland with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit, over an alleged incident in January 2020 involving an unnamed woman he was living with at the time. A police complaint said the incident resulted “in a traumatic condition” for the woman. He was arrested and released on bond that August, pleaded not guilty to both charges at an arraignment in October, and a pre-trial hearing was scheduled for April 27, 2023. The case had apparently gone unnoticed by media outlets until NBC News reported on it in January 2023.
Public Reaction and Consequences #
The fallout was immediate. Adult Swim, part of the Cartoon Network, announced that it had “ended our association” with Roiland, that “Rick and Morty” would continue without him for its seventh season, and that his roles would be recast. His video game studio, Squanch Games, said it had received Roiland’s resignation on January 16, 2023, in the wake of the news. Days later, 20th Television Animation and Hulu Originals issued a joint statement saying, “We have ended our association with Justin Roiland,” removing him from “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” and recasting his role in “Solar Opposites.”
More people then came forward with allegations on social media, including musician Allie Goertz, who shared a sexually explicit private message she said Roiland had sent her, and claims of predatory behavior toward minors. The allegations were not proven, but they hardened public opinion against him.
Current Status #
On March 22, 2023, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office dismissed the charges. “We dismissed the charges today because there was insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt,” spokesperson Kimberly Edds said in a statement, adding that “significant additional information came to light.” The dismissal came on the day a hearing had been scheduled to take place.
Roiland responded on social media, writing: “I have always known that these claims were false — and I never had any doubt that this day would come.” He said he was “thankful that this case has been dismissed but, at the same time, I’m still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process,” and that he was disappointed that so many people were “so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of a bitter ex trying to bypass due process and have me ‘canceled.’” He said he was determined to “move forward and focus both on my creative projects and restoring my good name.” Adult Swim, Hulu and the other companies declined comment on the dismissal.
Impact on Their Career/Life #
The dismissal did not restore Roiland’s career. “Rick and Morty” continued without him into its seventh season, “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” proceeded without his involvement, and Squanch Games moved on without its founder. Once one of animation’s most recognizable voices, Roiland, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, went from headlining two hit shows to being absent from all of them within weeks — a fall that the dismissal of the criminal case against him could not reverse.
