Umut Baz
Introduction
Umut Baz is a dental nurse whom a General Dental Council Professional Conduct Committee erased from the register in January 2024 after a ten-charge case spanning four years of conduct: a false complaint to the Solicitors Regulation Authority against a solicitor, months of derogatory and discriminatory emails to him, non-cooperation with the GDC’s investigation, and a series of outbursts during her own regulatory hearings — including, the panel found, exposing herself on camera and pouring red liquid over her chest and genital area during a video hearing. Baz attended much of the hearing unrepresented, gave evidence, alleged a conspiracy against her, then absented herself before closing submissions .
Background Information
The case began with Person A, a solicitor identified in the determination only as Person A. On 5 August 2020 Baz filed a report form with the SRA claiming he had lied in court correspondence by writing “I have had no prior dealings with her until today” — because, she said, he had in fact met her in 2011 at his home while representing a dentist before a GDC tribunal. The SRA investigated, contacted the dentist she named, and concluded in January 2021 that “there was no evidence to show that [the 2011] meeting had taken place”, taking no action against the firm. Person A told the GDC’s committee that he had never met Baz, had never represented a dentist in a regulatory tribunal, and described a house layout that contradicted her account. The panel preferred his evidence and found the 2011 meeting never happened — that Baz “had fabricated having met Person A in 2011 in order to add weight to her complaint” .
The Controversy or Incident That Led to Their Cancellation
On that foundation the committee found the false-complaint charge proved, along with charges that the complaint was malicious, intended to cause Person A alarm or distress, misleading, and dishonest. Between August 2020 and February 2021 Baz also sent or caused to be sent nine emails to Person A, the County Court or both, which the panel found derogatory and abusive — calling him a “sick mannered man”, his messages “weirdo emails”, and writing that “this is UK, not his pathetic jungle”. A further email of 2 February 2021 attacked his health in capital letters: “YOU HAVE ALZHEIMER, you need proper help, GO GET HELP” and “YOU MUST NOT WORK WITH PUBLIC, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PROPER CARER LOOKING AFTER YOUR NEEDS” — discriminatory remarks about his health, the panel found, proved as charged .
The remaining charges concerned her conduct toward the GDC itself. From December 2020 she failed to cooperate with its investigation. In a July 2022 email to GDC staff she failed to communicate appropriately. And at an Interim Order Review hearing on 28 July 2022 the panel found, on the testimony of those present and the hearing log — “Reg exposes herself on camera & pours fake blood over genital area” — that she interrupted the Chair and exposed herself on camera while pouring a red liquid over her chest and genital area. She was cleared of the remaining heads, with one head of charge 9 and charge 10 found not proved. Throughout the hearings she maintained that the case against her was “a conspiracy orchestrated initially by the former Chief Executive Officer of the GDC” and later “headed by the Chairperson”, accusing the GDC of leaking her details — assertions the panel found unfounded and, in parts, supported by documentation of doubtful authenticity .
The committee held that the proved facts, individually and collectively, amounted to misconduct: dishonest and malicious claims designed to make trouble with another regulator, offensive and discriminatory communications, complete disregard for the regulatory process, and conduct during proceedings that included the camera incident. It found a “persistent and ongoing campaign of harassment” against Person A, noting an email of 15 January 2024 — sent mid-hearing — threatening further legal action on the same disproven allegations, and noted her stated intention to complain about the participants in her own proceedings. With no mitigation found, persistent dishonesty and premeditation aggravating, and no insight or apology offered, the panel concluded her behaviour was fundamentally incompatible with remaining on the register and directed erasure .
Public Reaction and Consequences
Baz’s defence was conducted largely in her own voice: she cross-examined Person A, called a witness whose evidence went incomplete, and gave sworn evidence herself before walking out. The two criminal-justice bodies she had turned to — the SRA against Person A, and her complaints against the GDC — each ended against her: the SRA took no action, and the conspiracy allegations were rejected. MedicWatch records the erasure among dental professionals struck off in 2024 .
Current Status
Baz was erased from the register, with an immediate suspension order to cover the 28-day appeal period. She was already subject to two interim suspension orders — one from January 2022 on unrelated allegations, one from January 2023 on matters within this case — and the panel noted she was not working as a dental nurse. Unless she appealed, the erasure took effect 28 days after deemed service of the decision, dated 19 January 2024 .
Impact on Their Career/Life
Erasure ends Baz’s dental nursing registration in the UK. The panel’s route there ran through conduct that had little to do with clinical care and everything to do with how she treated the people and institutions around her practice: a solicitor she pursued with a fabricated complaint, a regulator she accused of conspiracy, and hearing rooms she disrupted. Because the committee found the dishonesty persistent and the risk of repetition ongoing — indeed, continuing during the hearing itself — any future restoration application starts from the finding that her attitudinal problems are “fundamentally incompatible with remaining on the register” .
